Project: Freeform Development
Project with: Personal/University Course-work
Type: 3D Modeling, Graphic Design

An exercise in digital design, revolving around learning 3D software and achieving control over them to create organic shapes. To use the software as a tool to spawn one’s imagination without being limited by the knowledge of the software.
The task was to generate a form out of any particular word. I picked the word ‘Violet’. Not so much the colour violet, but everything that the word signifies. For the concept to be strong enough, I penned down a little poem-concept to shape my thoughts, literally.

Purple

The echo of a thousand whispers,
The smoke off a drop of tear…
In lighter hues of hers’,
In the sunsets that disappear.

Sublime synecdoche,
Evidence of authority…
Of robes, Of satin silky,
Of Cleopatra and of beauty!

A secret that fills eternities,
A style beyond oblivion…
As tender as orchids and pansies,
As brutal as betrayal!

Vibrance of the greenness,
Catalyst to innovation…
The essence of the amethyst,
The hue of imagination!

The model was generated in Rhinoceros 3D and rendered in 3D Studio Max. The form was then printed through a 3D printer at the Design Research and Informatics Laboratory at the CAAD, Mississippi State University. These images explain the journey of the design – the process beyond the poem. From the raw natural forms, to playing with clay models, to the 3D software interface to the final 3D print.
